The people behind Happy Nook

Priscilla Mazon, Founder of Happy Nook

Founder

Priscilla Mazon

Happy Nook began in my home. When my son Emilio was born and I couldn't find an early childhood environment that felt warm, grounded, and intentional, I built one myself.

I grew up in Mexico City, where children are part of family life rather than handed off to it - passed between aunts and grandparents, running between kitchens, held closely throughout the day. That sense of being known, by many people, in a small community, is what I wanted Emilio to have. When I looked at daycares and preschools in Los Angeles, I kept seeing places that were either too clinical or too chaotic. None felt like a small, intentional village. So I started one.

What began seven years ago as a small in-home program - a few families, a backyard, natural materials, and the belief that children are capable from day one - has grown into the licensed center you see today. We are inspired by the Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches. Both are rooted in the belief that children are full people with their own ideas and curiosity. Every choice we make here, from our 1:3 infant ratio to the rhythm of the day to the materials we use, comes from watching what happens when children are given the time and trust to be themselves.

The team I've built reflects that same belief. Our teachers are experienced, thoughtful, and trained to follow each child's lead. Our space is bright, calm, and intentional — designed to invite exploration rather than direct it.

This is the place I wished existed when I was looking. I'm glad it finally does, and I'd love for your family to be part of it.

In college I had a phenomenal Early Childhood Education professor. On the last day of his class, he asked students to thank someone who made a difference. To my surprise, three people thanked me — for my gentleness and for smiling at each person who walked in. Afterwards, the professor said, "You're going to do great things! You're a bright light for kids." That's when I became a teacher.

I've taught Preschool for over 10 years, Lower Elementary for 3, and most recently served as an Assistant Preschool Director. I hold a BA in Liberal Studies and a Site Supervisor and Teacher Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

I am also an artist, which shapes how I teach. Watching children discover how creativity can help them feel and self-regulate is one of my favorite things to witness. I am thrilled to be the Director at Happy Nook and I look forward to building something truly special here.

I've been working with young children for 9 years, and toddlers are my favorite. They're curious, funny, and learn something new every day — I genuinely love being a part of it.

Sensory play is my favorite. Sand, paint, water, dough — when kids get their hands into something, that's when the real learning happens. I build my classroom around those moments and watch what unfolds.

I'm so happy to be at Happy Nook. The way this place is designed — the care, the intention behind it — it's the kind of environment where kids and teachers both get to do their best work.

I've spent 9 years working with young children, and the thing that drives me most is wanting every kid to feel like they belong.

I believe that building self-esteem early empowers kids to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. My goal is to create an environment where each child feels supported and encouraged to be exactly who they are.

Happy Nook feels like the right place to do this work. Small groups, relationships, a space where kids are seen — an environment I believe children thrive in.

Learning that starts with belonging

What began as a small, nurturing in-home program has grown into a beautiful early learning environment shaped by meaningful relationships and gentle, child-centered care.

We see each child as capable, curious, and whole — supporting every child at their own pace through small ratios, consistent caregivers, natural materials, and a daily rhythm that moves between thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces.

Our approach draws from Reggio Emilia and Montessori traditions — not as a rigid curriculum, but as a shared belief that children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and genuinely known. We don't rush development. We follow the child.

Families are a child's first teachers, and we treat that seriously. Through Brightwheel, you stay connected throughout the day — photos, updates, and direct communication with your child's caregivers.

What ages do you serve?

What are your hours?

We are open Monday through Friday. Drop-off begins at 8:30 AM and the program starts at 9:00 AM, with pickup at 4:30 PM.

What does tuition include?

Everything. No additional fees for materials, potty training, or supplies. Tuition is $3,000/month for children under 24 months and $2,500/month for 24 months and older. There is a one-time $700 registration fee to secure your spot.

How do I enroll?

Start by scheduling a tour. Fill out the form above and we'll reach out within one business day. After your tour, we'll walk you through the enrollment process together.

What is your curriculum / philosophy?

We draw from Reggio Emilia and Montessori philosophies — play-based learning, open-ended exploration, Montessori-inspired independence, and a calm, home-like atmosphere where children grow at their own pace.

What are your group sizes and ratios?

We intentionally keep our groups small across every classroom:

• Infants (0–18 months): 1:3 ratio
• Toddlers (18–36 months): 1:4 ratio
• Preschoolers (2–4 years): small groups

Every child is seen, known, and cared for as an individual.

How do you communicate with parents?

We use Brightwheel to keep families connected throughout the day. You'll receive real-time updates including photos, activity logs, meals, nap times, and daily notes — all from your phone. You can also message staff directly through the app. Staying closely connected with families is part of how we care.

Are meals and snacks provided?

Happy Nook provides fresh organic snacks each morning and afternoon, prepared and served on-site. Monthly snack menus are posted in advance. Families provide their child's meals (breakfast and lunch), which should be labeled, age-appropriate, and ready to eat. We are a nut-free center — no nuts, nut butters, or nut products may be brought in. Non-nut alternatives like sunflower butter are welcome with proper labeling.

What is your sick child policy?

We ask that children stay home if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or any contagious symptoms. If a child becomes unwell during the day, we'll contact you right away. Children should be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning. This keeps everyone — children and caregivers — healthy and safe.

What is your immunization policy?

All children must be fully up to date on California-required vaccinations before enrollment. If you have specific questions about immunization requirements, we're happy to walk you through everything during your tour or speak with you directly.

What security measures are in place?

Happy Nook uses a purpose-built access control system. The building remains locked at all times — entry requires an assigned PIN unique to each authorized family. All visitors are verified before entry, and only individuals on your child's authorized list may pick up or drop off. Children are signed in and out at the classroom door each day.
